Water savings calculator

Estimate how much flushing water your urinals use each year and what that volume costs in variable water and wastewater charges in your municipality.

Start from

These starting points are hypothetical illustrations, not measured averages for Ontario buildings. Replace any value with your facility's figures; low usage and 0.5 L fixtures are fine.

An average across all operating days, not the busiest day.

Current litres per flush

Flush valves are usually marked with a rating in US gallons (GPF) or litres (LPF). 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L.

Operating days per year

City of Toronto: $4.8629/m³ combined water and wastewater, effective January 1, 2026. Block 1 combined rate, paid by the due date. Source: official municipal rate page, checked October 28, 2026. Rates change; check your latest bill.

10 urinals × 50 uses × 3.8 L × 365 days × $4.8629/m³

Illustrative estimate of flushing water and variable utility charges avoided if these urinals no longer flushed. It is not a guarantee, a quote or a return-on-investment figure: it excludes purchase, installation, cleaning, consumables such as replacement odour traps, maintenance, fixed utility charges and other operating costs. Five-year values assume today's rate and usage.

No cost and no obligation.

How the estimate is calculated

  1. Annual flushing water avoided (litres) = urinals × uses per urinal per day × litres per flush × operating days
  2. Annual volume (m³) = annual litres ÷ 1,000
  3. Estimated annual variable utility charges = annual m³ × combined variable water and wastewater rate (CAD per m³)
  4. Five-year values = annual values × 5, at today's rate and usage

What the estimate leaves out

It covers flushing water only. It excludes the purchase price, installation and any drain work, cleaning products, replacement odour traps, servicing labour, fixed or service charges on your bill, and future rate changes. That's why it isn't a net saving or a return-on-investment figure. A facility assessment adds those costs so you can compare them properly.

About the starting values

The calculator opens on an illustrative commercial example: 10 urinals, 50 uses per urinal per day, 3.8 litres a flush, 365 operating days and the City of Toronto rate. The office, busy restaurant and large commercial facility options are also hypothetical. None of them is a measured average for Ontario buildings, and none is an assumption about yours. Replace any value with your own figures at any time, including low usage or 0.5-litre fixtures; the calculator never sets a minimum to make the result look better.

Five-year figures use the same inputs and today's rate. Change an input and both the annual and five-year figures update together.

Beyond the water bill

The calculator only counts flushing water. These benefits don't appear in it, and neither do the costs of looking after waterless urinals.

  • Less flushing-system maintenanceWaterless urinals have no flush valve, sensor or water supply line to the fixture, so the leaks, sticking valves and sensor faults those parts cause are no longer part of the urinal's upkeep.
  • Water conservationEvery flush avoided is drinking-quality water that doesn't need to be treated, pumped and then treated again as wastewater.
  • Specialized odour controlURIMAT urinals use a membrane odour trap that opens when liquid flows and closes again afterwards, with a cleaning block built into the cartridge.
  • Care they still needURIMAT urinals need their own routine care: daily bowl cleaning with a compatible cleaner, replacement trap cartridges (URIMAT gives an average of 7,000 to 8,000 uses each), and periodic drain checks. These are ongoing consumable and labour costs, and the assessment includes them.

Municipal rates used

Each preset is the combined variable rate for water and wastewater per cubic metre from the municipality's official rate page or by-law, checked on the date shown. Where rates vary by monthly usage, the preset uses the band noted. Fixed charges are excluded. Rates change, usually each January or April, so check your latest bill. If your municipality isn't listed, choose "Other" and enter the rate from your bill.
